After leaving Vietnam and moving far from home, my life changed in many ways. I graduated from George Brown College in Toronto, Canada, where I learned character design, concept art, and 3D modeling for video games and animation. I worked in game art design before becoming a freelance watercolor illustrator. Soon, I found myself drawn to children’s illustration, which is now my favorite kind of art to make. Every week, I visit my local library in Florida to read children’s books and do what I love most: drawing.
Diversity is at the heart of everything I create. I believe that every child should be able to find a book that speaks to them, and I aim to be the artist who makes those kinds of books. As someone who has lived and worked in different places and speaks more than one language, I want to share meaningful art that reflects life across many cultures. I use bright colors and lively characters to show how vibrant life can be, no matter where you are from or where you live.
In the work I take on, I gravitate toward projects that speak to children who have known adversity, such as immigrants like me, and I try to offer them optimism. I also embrace those in our LGBTQIA+ community who may be navigating their own intersectional identities. And, above all, my art is about empathy, hope, and believing in a brighter future.
Let’s make our world a better place!
